Day 13: Still thinking back on this Episode, we were playing Nightmare at the Museum. My players didn't check out the geology wing of the museum, and missed out on the main mineral exhibit -- the newly discovered "Carocossite."

Lot of lovecraftian stuff simmering in the background of that one....

Day 12:

Great moment from a session recently. One of my players was The Law, and they were in the middle of a big dramatic scene with a fellow player. The Law used their playbook move to establish a rule that everyone in the scene must follow: "No one may leave"

I bookmarked this in my head.

There's a light mechanic that happens in this case, but the moment itself was the reward/punishment.

Like, Hello Zepp from Saw might as well have started playing as my players realized the small cut-ins I had been seeding the whole scene leading to bait them into this moment.

Golden.

So, my Law said the magic words, "I'll run away."

And my other players saw the shit-eating grin as I frantically double-checked the wording on the move, and it finally settled in on my Law. They broke their rule.

The scene continued, and the dramatic moment between players became something quite beautiful. As that wrapped up, a number of mummies showed up to attack the characters, too many to reasonably fight, especially if they wanted to have enough resources to wrap up the Episode this session.

Shadow highlight!

Hello, it's The Scribe - aka the know-it-all
November 13, 2025 at 12:33 AM
Narratively, the Shadow is about feeling smarter than everyone around them. That sense of superiority that masks a deeper insecurity over something. It's a fragile mask that your Light wears to get through being a teenager.

Each Shadow is a different version of this.

Their additional moves, then, are about helping generate more and more Power Words to fuel this engine (as well as making them a powerful duelist).

Conditions, Paint the Scene answers, real life trivia, and even clues themselves are all fair game for Power Word creation in these moves.

The Scribe is interesting, because they have a really strong mechanical core focused on directly combining the in-game Ritual Deck game with the CfB investigation. Their core move, "Truth in History," creates new Clues the same way cards are played in a duel.

Meet Armina l'Egg.

I love Armina. She's got the dirt on everyone, and knows all the rumors in the school (many of which may or may not have been started by her).
November 11, 2025 at 12:42 AM
which was partially inspired by my great great grandmother (I was just fascinated by the name Armina, cool fuckin name) -- so I went for the most newsies-ass character I could think of. My players were in love.

I love Armina, she's in Big Trouble in Battle City, a (suggested) intro Episode for the game, but I first played her in testing during Duel Justice, when a player asked to visit the school newspaper.
At that point in development, I didn't have anything for her other than the name --

Armina l'Egg is Battle City Prep's star reporter, and writes the wildly popular gossip column in the school newspaper. With her signature suspenders and a newsboy cap, no one can stop her from hunting a story, save for a bigger scoop...

Day 9!
It takes a village to launch a game, and I got a couple friends of mine to write Episodes for Ritual Deck. Early in dev, I tapped my friends Hawk Williams and Lore Arnold to fill out some light sketches of episodes for me, and they turned in things that were soooo cool.

Also, the first ever written episode, back when I started this project with @uptightchiffon.bsky.social, co-written by them, is Sepulchre Suite. A weird, freaky, Danganronpa-type experience about being trapped in a hotel and forced to play a game where your soul is at stake.
