When I told that joke about the second RTD era, all those years ago, it was only a single line. Now it's evolved to the size of a whole book. I don't know if I can defeat that joke this time.

The ringing of the church bell seemed to carry a long way in such a bitter cold as this, as if the deep timbre of the sound was actually breaking through the frigid air, travelling along hairline cracks in the frozen sky. The carollers, undeterred, merely adjusted the tempo of their song, seeming to relish the way the hollow clanging punctuated each line. Huddled against the corner of a brickwork factory which adjoined the churchyard, the king of all the world pulled the tattered remnants of his ermine cape more tightly about his shoulders, his teeth chattering against the biting December wind. Even now, Darius found, the carols annoyed him more than did the cold. It seemed like such a Cupidly thing to do, spreading joy by song. He missed Blackheart. There was a surprise — he was too cold now to bid his mind not to think such thoughts, not with any success. Truly, he reflected with a sardonic sneer, freezing in an alleyway on Christmas Eve just got worse and worse.
