At a time when we are seeing substantial shifts in the rights of girls, women, and gender-diverse people south of the border, we must be proactive in supporting those rights and breaking barriers here.

3. If you personally support equity in STEM, donate to initiatives that are breaking barriers and doing that important work. According to Paulette Senior (2022), less than 2% of charitable giving goes to organizations dedicated to women and girls in the USA and likely Canada.

1. As we head into elections for all levels of government, make sure candidates and elected officials from ALL PARTIES know that equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in STEM are priorities for you.

To create lasting change, we need to ensure that support of these initiatives continues over the long term, both within government and beyond.

Over the past 6 years, there has been strong federal support for gender equity in STEM, which has expanded the impact of CAGIS and many other organizations with demonstrated track records.

Additionally, removing barriers for women, gender-diverse people, and other underrepresented groups can reduce labour shortages in STEM fields that fuel Canada's economy.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗠, for the equity-deserving group, for corporations, and for the Canadian economy. For example, diverse work forces are associated with higher profits and more novel scientific ideas with higher impact.

To create lasting change it is important for multiple levels of government, the STEM sector, and the public to invest in evidence-based programs with demonstrated track records of success, over the long term.
