I ask my Intro Bio students what societal problems need biology knowledge to solve, and say they can think about things affecting their communities. Interestingly, this year vaccines and misinformation came out as a popular response and didn't the past two yrs I did this. 🧪

New office art thanks to @skypeascientist.bsky.social : Research funding does save lives. 🧪

Also talked about cancelled NSF LSAMP program that paid for student books, workshops, & research experiences that many previous Intro students class participated in. And NIH URISE, cut in March, restored in July, maybe on the chopping block again thanks to SCOTUS. So science is political & personal

I used this Konrad Lorenz quote to start my thesis and thought it was apt for the day: "It is a good morning exercise for a research scientist to discard a pet hypothesis every day before breakfast.” When I first started teaching I figured I should make sure I knew who Lorenz was.

The 1st day of Intro Bio is about the expts showing DNA is the heritable material, not protein which seemed to make more sense. Every year I emphasize the importance of discarding pet hypotheses, that Nobel Laureates can be wrong (or Nazis!), & that science is political. This yr got a 2025 update 🧪

The lab took a trip to see and smell Terry Titan the SJSU corpse flower yesterday 🧪

I had a wonderful time today visiting w @neuronush.bsky.social and talking to the students in the summer undergrad research program she & @christineliu.art run. They helped fill in the gaps from all the cancelled summer programs, funded w sales from these amazing pins. 🧪

My insanely talented friend made me muscle spindle bookends-one using the spindle confocal image in my profile. She got the wood from another scientist on Twitter years ago, made an awesome dining room table and is using the rest for science gifts for people who invite her for seminars. 🧪

Joined many of my neighbors in San Jose for a completely peaceful march today. Enough people marched to fill the 1 mile route completely at least twice. Saw multiple elected officials and families and thankfully no militarized police presence. #NoKings

In positive science news today I attended former lab student Natanya’s fabulous thesis defense. Thanks to Zoom I’ve gotten to see 5 of 6 lab alum defenses. Also fun to see her poster in the wild since I happened to be visiting U of O this weekend!

Still thinking about this graph and the disproportionate cuts to @calstate.bsky.social vs the UC system vs Stanford. CSU lost ~1.7% of funding, UC ~0.7%, and Stanford 0.1% of funding. Even by absolute dollar amts, Stanford has lost ~5x less than the CSU! 🧪

Congratulations to all 10 teams representing SJSU at the @calstate.bsky.social Research Competition. Excited that Mayra Cardenas Rojo, Mariam Malik, Leena Rehman, and Sherry Tsai from my lab won 2nd place in their category! 🧪🧵

Incredible Grilione Seminar at SJSU today from @berondam.bsky.social. I learned lots of cool things about plants and mentorship. Good reminder to change the environment instead of blaming the student. Grateful for former prof that endows this series. 🧪

Special thanks to @apsphysiology.bsky.social Science Policy Staff who have been running a similar workshop with me the past three years & who helped create the materials.

Honored to win the G.A.M.E.T.E. Award for grad student mentorship in my department. It’s really my students that deserve the credit though-Husna and Thao turned in 2 of the top 3 research fellowship applications this year.

Every year in my Neurophys class I start with an activity to talk about the difference between correlation and causation & use this graph. The only thing they can do before Sept is pull some random correlations-guessing starting with vaccines. This man should not be anywhere near science agencies 🧪

5 yrs ago I was at Emory to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the IRACDA teaching & research postdoc program. My teaching mentor was one of the first fellows and a student I mentored as a PD is now Assistant Professor. This program helped prepare us to be better teachers, researchers, & mentors 🧪 1/
