Señorita wore blazers every day, and every day an American flag pin on her lapel. One day a few of asked her how she could possibly wear that, how could she be patriotic, knowing all of this and seeing it and teaching it to us. Her response was simple:

When it came to modern Central American history, Señorita had us read graphic depictions of atrocities committed by US-trained and US-supported fighters. This was my first exposure to the US not always representing “the good guy.” I left class every day for weeks numb or in tears. (3/4)

One of my favorite teachers in high school was Señorita Condon who (perhaps obviously) taught the upper-level Spanish classes. In Spanish 4, my senior year, we had learned all of the grammatical rules and so the class focused mostly on practice and on history and culture. (2/4)
