Erstwhile medievalist, voracious reader, political junkie, collector of life moments & culture enthusiast.
Not my favourite of the shortlist but not an unworthy winner. #BookerPrize2025
‘We had never read anything quite like it. It is, in many ways, a dark book but it is a joy to read’

We're delighted to announce Flesh by David Szalay as the winner of the #BookerPrize2025.

What service to the state, from both man and dog/s over the last decades. May retirement treat him, doggo and family, with all the kindness he's embodied as a leader.
President Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina are preparing to leave Áras an Uachtaráin for the final time this evening as his term comes to an end.

Catherine Connolly will be inaugurated tomorrow as Ireland’s next president.

Beckett today. Challenging but interesting.

Joyful London day and night.

All candidates should have to get a passing grade on a theory test before they get a learner's permit for the campaign!

Relieved to see Longford on this list. Not the most inspiring of fields but at least the most extreme, shameful and embarrassing voices won't be part of the campaign.
Six councils have today declined to nominate any Independent candidate for the Presidential Election. They are Dublin City Council, Cork City Council; Galway City Council; Longford County Council; Roscommon County Council; and Laois County Council.

My favourite so far on the @thebookerprizes.com long list, alongside One Boat. I'm at 9 of 13, but the new Kiran Desai is not out until after the shortlist date... so I think I'll be finished at 10 of 13, unless of course the 3 I've skipped end up shortlisted! 😄

This part of the world really does theatres very well! 'Tis the season for it, for me. Strong start to the run of 5 plays booked over the next 2 months.

Catching up on the day's news, and it's just what I dreaded. How can a country shaped by the civil discourse of the Federalist Papers have ended up where it is now? This is no city on a hill. 😟

Sublime as ever. Very few writers turn a phrase quite so memorably.

@bertsbooks.bsky.social's Book Club choice this month has left me in two minds. A page turner but I'm not sure I like what it has to say. Really looking forward to the discussion tomorrow night.

Autumn/Winter is theatre season for me & some delicious treats ahead in the next 12 weeks, from Cheltenham & Bath to London..with performances from Ralph Fiennes, Ncuti Gatwa & Brendan Gleeson in sight.

Starting #Booker 7 of longlist 13 now & I was determined to finish before the shortlist on 23rd, but just clocked Sonia & Sunny not out until 25th. 🤔 Need someone corrected to get me a proof copy @bertsbooks.bsky.social! Audition, finished tonight, is a cracking read.

Working my way through the longlist, courtesy of @bertsbooks.bsky.social but favourite so far, by a country mile, is Universality. Will make you think but also make you laugh out loud over & over again. Everyone working in research funding has met/been John!

I'm only 3 books deep into the longlist so far & holding out for the new Kiran Desai but Natasha Brown's Universality, finished today, is exceptionally clever. #BookerPrize
A Monday morning question: which book(s) did you spend your weekend with?

A week on home shores has been illuminating. Much still to miss, not least my new niece, but plus ça change is lingering impression. €16 to take a walk through the trees by Parnell's Avondale, left me asking if this is how home rule should be.

Something lovely about landing on the home sod. #Knock #IrelandWest Home to meet the first new family member in 40+ years. #Aunt

I love a good voting opportunity but only have until 5pm today to cast alumnus vote online for Cambridge Chancellor, and a bit awash with manifestos that mostly feel very similar. Undecided, which is very unlike me!

Book of the year so far for me. Have staked my credibility on assuring @bertsbooks.bsky.social tonight that @wednesdayerskin.bsky.social's #TheBenefactors will be on multiple literary long lists this year. So many authentic voices & views captured; astonishing.

Carrie Coon is just chewing up the scenery in #TheGildedAge. Extraordinary performance. 'Go to bed, George, and wake up sensible'.

I'm not sure how but every year I still manage to be surprised and saddened by the Twelfth. When will we be better humans? 😕

Jeff's having a sale. Struggling a bit, I think. He's got a wedding to pay for after all.

If I bought his rocket from him, that might help, but I'll need you all to buy more books from Bert's.

Help me help Jeff. Buy a book from Bert's.

Has to be a ploy to flush out Bertie's intentions? She can't be misguided enough to think she can *really* follow the other Marys.
