It is critical thinking that really worries them, and almost by definition you cannot 'indoctrinate' students to think critically. The fact that they think education equates to indoctrination says more about their own model of education than about the reality of what happens in universities.

What about these totally regular everyday young voters?

I see that it is now 'Remembrance weekend' rather than the usual Remembrance Sunday.

Debate seems to encourage a "winner takes all" zero-sum mentality (a set of monlogues), which can quickly become toxic on social media. Dialogue, as a more constructive approach, would be preferable but it is difficult to achieve once a platform heads in the direction of incessant debate.

I know that @t0nyyates.bsky.social has given out some and was looking for more.

The Brexiters would probably insist on a supermajority clause in any Rejoin vote, so of course they think that now 🤔 What would they have been like if they had a majority for Brexit but didn't meet the 60% threshold? It would have been called a fix. Referendums are not the answer to social divisions

Although my personal preference is for Mastodon, I think that Bluesky looks best placed at the moment to inherit the Twitter mantle once that place finally goes into meltdown. The question is whether Bluesky will inherit the trolls and abusive posters too. Hopefully not, but I would not bet against.

I am sorry to hear that you had a negative experience. I have been on Mastodon for around a year and not had anything like that (although I am not the most prolific poster). I am also trying out Bluesky and Threads, which are both OK so far. I just wish they could all be interoperable.

I marvel at people who can pick things casually from a menu without omitting items, specifying how things should be done or substituting items. The whole process of ordering can be a trauma.

Yes, this! I have so many issues with food (textures, colour, etc) that every encounter ordering food in a restaurant is painful. I just do not do sharing, even if I am with a group of people who want to share. The chances are that most of the "sharing" food would be something I would never eat.

There's a delicious sense of justice here. The Uxbridge win led Sunak to adopt a posture of increasingly aggressive climate sabotage - cancelling HS2, weakening carbon commitments, inventing imaginary wars on motorists and meat-eaters.

I have a total of 8 posts, all entirely uncontroversial (unless expressing a preference for a particular Mastodo app is a controversial issue), but still managed to be blocked by someone. 😶

Agree that Elk Zone is good. You can use Elk Zone as an app on Android. Go to the web zone and log in to Mastodon, then select Add to Home Screen. It works pretty well and is not at all 'clunky'.

It evokes fond memories of Liz Truss's mauling on her disastrous round of local radio interviews last year. Do they never learn?

A good article. I like the decentralised philosophy of Mastodon, and while Bluesky looks good so far, it is not clear what will develop out of the AT Protocol. I am curious to know what the advantage is of creating a new protocol rather than joining/improving ActivityPub, as Threads is aiming to do.
