UCU’s message to Labour has been consistent.

If you want to turn the tide on years of austerity, you must invest in the college, higher and adult education sectors.

Any ‘fightback’ that does not include genuine investment and support for education to play its crucial role will be superficial.

Absolutely heartbroken that UCU member Will Nelson tragically lost his life in the accident in Lisbon this week.

Rest in peace, Will. We are all devastated by this news.

He could, and should, have stopped at part one of that sentence. Palestinian statehood should not be dependent on whether or not an aggressor neighbour state agrees to a ceasefire. Have some conviction, Prime Minister.

Marwan al-Sultan, a senior doctor in Gaza, has become the 70th healthcare worker to be killed by Israeli attacks in the past 50 days. A number of family members were murdered alongside him.

Marwan’s murder is part of a systematic and sickening targeting of healthcare workers.

The IDF knows no mercy. Every day brings a new slaughter of innocent Palestinians.

I’m very lucky to have my dad. Over the last 41 years he’s given me a lot. Strength, courage, importance of never bending a knee to the Tories, Sheffield Wednesday and the formative summer of 1984.

Thanks for everything Dad. Even Wednesday 🦉

What is there left to say. This is a war crime. This is genocide. This is ethnic cleansing. This is an unimaginable horror. Delivered by Israel, and it has been aided and abetted by the UK.

We must see sanctions, arrests, and the everything possible to stop this state sanctioned murder.

It’s actually just great skincare, Ray. You’ve taken 20 years off me 😉

Labour won’t get anywhere pandering to reform. They must take them on. That’s what I tried to do tonight on Question Time.
May 8, 2025 at 10:13 PM
Tune into Question Time on BBC1 tonight at 10:40pm.

This was my general vibe.

Whether you’re in a trade union or not, Gendered Intelligence have created a list of activities you can do. Obviously this is not exhaustive, but it’s a starting point.

Workers Day of Action for Trans Rights

⏰ Today!
📍Your workplace!

It is incumbent on trade unionists to resist the Supreme Court ruling and EHRC interim update.

Trans rights are human rights. Trans rights are workers rights.

A thread of inspiration, ideas, and action.

‘Israeli minister says Gaza will be destroyed and people driven out’

This is ethnic cleaning. It follows 64 days of starving Palestinians by blocking food and aid. Netanyahu is acting with impunity, because he’s faced zero consequences for his actions.

Full UK arms embargo and arrest warrant now.

UCU and the trade union movement will protect and stand with trans people, whether the law cares or not.

Join us for an emergency demo in London.

On the way to Parliament. There is a Westminster Hall debate today which will address the marketisation of higher education, which has fuelled attacks, underfunding and mistreatment of staff and students.

Our stop the cuts campaign continues to build momentum 💪

Coventry University are trying to sack hundreds of staff and introduce fire and rehire for hundreds more.

Yet their billboards boast of job creation in the area.

This from John Latham, a Vice Chancellor paid £320,000 plus an £80,000 ‘bonus’ for overseeing this shambles.

Inspiring day with Newcastle UCU

The uni claims to be cash strapped. But as they announced 300 jobs cuts to plug a £35mn deficit, they also announced they would invest in a new campus overseas.

Universities are acting like rogue corporations. These cuts aren’t inevitable, and we will beat them.

Absolute pleasure to be in Cardiff today, speaking with our Welsh members, and an honour to address the conference on matters central to our members and how UCU is uniting the fights they face.

Leeds PhD student, Salma al-Shehab, who was sentenced to 34 years in prison for posting tweets in support of women’s rights has been released

Very proud of the work @leedsucu.bsky.social has done to support Salma. She must now be allowed to travel and resume her PhD

UCU Cymru rally at Senedd. Struck by our members and supporters spirit, solidarity and energy.

I will do everything possible to pressure the Welsh and Westminster governments to ensure education is properly funded, and that our branches under attack have every resource they need.
