An excellent showing from the Perseids! Out for 70 minutes, counted 17 meteors, and about 7 of them were amazing fireballs - one streaked across a quarter of the sky! I predicted one every 5-10 mins, so pretty good showing 😊

It’s the peak of the Perseids tonight! I’m heading out in about half an hour with my Dad. Loungers ready, I’ve got my oodie and joggers. Hoping for some good ones, despite the moonlight!

It’s the peak of the Perseids tonight! I’m heading out in about half an hour with my Dad. Loungers ready, I’ve got my oodie and joggers. Hoping for some good ones, despite the moonlight!

There's been a supernova and WAS astrophotographer Carl Lancaster has the before and after of this star blowing it's guts out into the universe, erupting in "nearby" galaxy NGC 7331, 40 million light-years away in the constellation Pegasus. #SN2025rbs #Supernova #WestportAstronomicalSociety

There's an update about 3I/ATLAS! Although the paper is yet to go through the peer-review process (arxiv.org/pdf/2507.05318), it seems that 3I/ATLAS could originate from our Galaxy's thick disk, making it the first interstellar object from there! Might also be 3 billion years older than our (1/2)

Today's work is all about editing for Fifth Star Labs Sky Guide app. While I develop a lot of our content, we also have fantastic writers who feature regularly. It's my job to catch those typos, hunt complementary images, and integrate to release into the wild! Look out for something new soon!
So glad that Rosalind Franklin got a new lease of life and will be heading off to the Red Planet! We know the surface of Mars is sterilised by UV radiation from the Sun, so digging deep is the only way we'll find signs of current life, if they are there to be found
Two missions are teaming up to answer if life ever existed on Mars:
🛰️ Launched in 2016, the Trace Gas Orbiter is orbiting Mars, searching for evidence in atmospheric gases
🤖 Due to launch in 2028, the Rosalind Franklin rover will drill and research from the ground
