When Hobson’s Pledge insists that Maori have "privilege", nothing supports their position.

Te Tiriti was born as a shield for Māori and a restraint on British settlers. The 1837 Report of the Select Committee on Aborigines exposed, with painful clarity, the violence and exploitation settlers were inflicting not only here in Aotearoa but across the Empire.

"The right-wing claim the Musket Wars prove Māori were “lawless” and “barbaric” before 1840. This is a dangerous myth. Settlers fueled the Musket Wars and exploited lawlessness at the edge of the British Empire for profit and greed."

"Its mission is clear: seize control of resources, capture profits, and consolidate power."

"The disunity Māori feel is not a flaw in Māori society. It is a result of the government’s design. The settlement process reflects Crown priorities, not Māori ways of resolving conflict, recognising shared whakapapa, or honouring relationships."

"If these parties come together with courage and compassion, they can help Aotearoa move forward in a way that honours the spirit of Te Tiriti and upholds the mana of all who call this land home."

"The pressure placed on the Treaty today threatens the well-being of everyone who calls Aotearoa home. Entrenching it is an act of national care. It is a commitment to a fairer, stronger, and more united future."

Once again, right‑wing politics and New Zealand First are using our communities as bargaining chips. Whether Māori, Asian, Indian, or Chinese, we are treated as expendable, a convenient pawn pulled out every election cycle, as if our rights, our dignity, and our futures can be traded away for votes.

"When states fear difference, they often respond with assimilation, dispossession, and violence. But history shows that identity rooted in justice and community cannot be erased."
January 26, 2026 at 6:59 PM
"When people accept a simplified story that divides Māori into “good Māori” and “bad Māori,” or believe leaders are taking resources for themselves, it becomes easier for harmful policies to be justified."

"Nations that kept written records were considered legitimate and orderly. Societies that transmitted knowledge orally were cast as primitive, chaotic or undeveloped. These judgments reflected European cultural values rather than any objective study of human language."
January 24, 2026 at 7:24 PM
"Indian New Zealanders who had long been present but marginalised were now recognised within the constitutional story of Aotearoa. Equality was no longer an ideal but an expectation."
January 24, 2026 at 9:24 AM
"The idea of formal equality isn't just a flawed concept; it's a cruel joke. To demand that the law treat Māori and Pākehā the same today is to deliberately ignore centuries of legal violence that built Pākehā privilege on Māori dispossession."

"These myths were not harmless misunderstandings. They were tools of power. By questioning Māori origins and portraying them as destructive or secondary, colonial and later right-wing voices sought to weaken Māori claims under Te Tiriti o Waitangi and diminish their role as guardians of the land."
January 20, 2026 at 9:01 PM
"Pan-Māori movements like the Kīngitanga, formed in 1858 to unify Māori and protect land, were treated as existential threats. The Crown invaded Waikato in 1863 to neutralise the King Movement and confiscate its supporters’ lands."

"In other words, the success stories become cover. They make big changes feel harmless. They encourage people to see Treaty commitments as optional, outdated, or divisive, rather than part of the country’s foundation."

The following is on the wall at the entrance to the gurdwara (Sikh Temple) in Papatoetoe. With the extensive disinformation campaign from right wing religious groups, I thought it was important to note what followers see every day when they enter.

On social media and in political debates, a common argument often surfaces: “If Chinese or Indian immigrants succeed despite historical disadvantage, why aren’t Māori?”
January 17, 2026 at 8:30 PM
"Generations grew up believing that leadership, law, medicine, and academia were “not for them.” Futures were not just narrowed; they were deliberately fenced in. This was not a partnership; it was colonial dominance disguised as benevolence."
January 16, 2026 at 7:29 PM
"Te Tiriti will not survive on goodwill alone; it will endure when iwi act like the power they are and make rollback politically costly."
January 15, 2026 at 8:11 PM
"The numbers speak with clarity. Public opposition to anti-Treaty legislation dwarfs ACT’s electoral support. Institutional resistance is widespread. There is no mandate, only a political project pursued against the will of the people."
January 6, 2026 at 7:20 PM
"For years, Dr Don Brash has claimed to defend equality in Aotearoa, yet his public messages consistently rely on distortion, fear, and misdirection. He frames himself as a guardian of fairness, but his statements push New Zealand further from the truth and closer to suspicion of Māori."
January 5, 2026 at 7:39 PM
"In 1920, the Returned Soldiers’ Association publicly pushed the government to restrict immigration from non-European communities, specifically targeting Indians (described as “Hindus” in the language of the day) and Chinese, and to affirm the principle of a “white New Zealand.”
January 4, 2026 at 10:33 PM
"The White New Zealand League (founded 1925 in Pukekohe) was a fiercely anti‑Asian pressure group that pushed to 'Keep New Zealand White' by demanding strict limits on Asian immigration and preventing Indians and Chinese from owning land or participating fully in community life."
