Are you at #EGU25? Do you have exciting climate / polar science results to share? Do you wanna appear in an EGU-themed vid for my YouTube channel?

Come say hi, I'm friendlier than I look (it's just the resting cockney face, promise).

Please share with anyone who'd be up for it 😘

Really psyched to be included on this list of climate creators for 2025 from @harvardcchange.bsky.social and @piqueaction.bsky.social

Check out the other creators here t.co/DP3gSINObc

They're all doing great work :)

🗻The effects of atmospheric rivers in West Antarctica are strongly controlled by the steep terrain.

The slopes also drive warming near the surface, and ramp up the production of snow via a phenomenon called the seeder-feeder effect.

All the models simulate rain (so does ERA5) but whereas they all agree on snowfall, rain is not such a clear picture.

Hi-res really helps here, and it's all we've got to go on because there are no observations of rainfall in this region - this really should change!

But it's not just snow we see in the results - oh no.

☔Rain is also falling at sub-zero temperatures over the ice shelves and even over the ice streams of Thwaites and Pine Island.

Rain (dark blue contours) falls above the melt line (dashed) in this figure, showing a transect through PIG.

We use hi-res regional modelling to look at two atmospheric river cases (winter & summer).

Observations are scarce in this region and we have obs of snowfall only over Thwaites (thanks to AMIGOS sensors). All models do well, and better than ERA5 ⬇️

This makes hi-res modelling essential!

The LA #wildfires are being driven by a combo of human, weather & #climate factors: a perfect storm that's turbocharging the impacts of an already devastating blaze.

#ClimateChange increases the size & severity of fires, meaning more people will be exposed to these terrifying extremes in future.

Fossil-fuelled extreme events are already dangerous, and they're getting worse.

The bottom line is: we're not doing enough, and we're not doing it fast enough to avoid further disasters like we see in Valencia.

Have you listened to the British Antarctic Survey's new podcast series yet?

In this episode we spoke about the challenges of communicating the science of the climate crisis

It was a really great chat (if I do so so myself 😂)

Not my usual subject material, although one close to my heart (IYKYK).

My op-ed in the Big Issue today on why Imane Khelif's #olympic gold medal is a victory against hate.

"Sport should bring us together, not tear us apart."

Wahoo! We love handshakes 🤝

Was great to be at the Royal Meteorological Society's annual meeting last month to accept my 2022 award for Emerging Communicator and to celebrate becoming FRMetS.

Congrats to all the other winners and fellows from 2022 & 2023 🥳

Atmospheric rivers can drive wild extremes in #Antarctica, delivering huge amounts of heat, snow, and even rain.

Find out what they mean for the #climate in my new video:

If you don't think we're changing our climate at breakneck speed, you're really not paying attention.

From @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social's latest analysis showing record air & ocean temperatures for February.

#Antarctic sea ice just reached its joint second-lowest minimum, according to NSIDC.

It's clear that urgent action is required to curb rapid heating at the poles, but is this evidence of a 'regime shift'?

New video!

Ahead of #COP28, I spoke to the ICCI's Dr James Kirkham about what's at stake in the negotiations for the cryosphere.

And the message is stark: 2°C is simply too high for the world's ice.
