I think I might be a cosmic influencer (a bad influencer?)
There’s an asteroid named after me (22410 Grinspoon) which is better than having one with your name on it…
Check it out!
We (Durty Neil) are playing live on air Tuesday 12-2 for a Neil Young birthday tribute on WOWD.
(Durty Neil only plays Neil songs that haven’t had radio play.
But then if we play them live on air does that mean we can’t play them again?)

WOW!
An incredible discovery. The first ever image of a baby exoplanet embedded in the dust rings from which planets are forming around a star. Confirms the developing view of planet formation that we’ve never before seen in action.

Re-upping this because I don’t want this profound cosmological insight to be lost in the dust of space-time:

I’m sorry to learn that Donna Jean Godchaux has died. Her exuberant harmonies with the Grateful Dead in the 1970s enriched and elevated the band’s vocal sound during their most consistently great decade of performances. When she was on (not every night…) it was frequently pure heart of gold magic.

Sad to learn that great jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette has played his last on this Earth.
So much great music he played on, including with Miles, Sonny, Sun Ra, Jarrett, Herbie, Abercrombie, and his own brilliant music as a bandleader.

Here’s a favorite track:

“We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.”

—Ursula K Le Guin, who would have turned 96 today.

Hey if you can find a dark (ish) place look for the COMET tonight!

Hatch act anyone?
Duffy, NASA’s “acting administrator” (he is definitely only acting the role) is not only blatantly lying, he is breaking the law here.
Also, he wants to merge NASA into the Dept of Transportation?
A once proud agency descends further into idiocracy.

A year ago we launched Clipper towards Europa.
Since then NASA science has been ravaged & threatened by our malevolent administration. By the time Clipper is orbiting Jupiter and sending back precious data we will have different people in power. As perilous as the journey is, that gives me hope.

A sorry record. This is one reason I don’t care for the Nobel prizes. Three others being:

1) promotes a “great man” view of scientific progress, whereas science is best understood and celebrated as a collective, community activity.

A great primate has left our habitat. Jane Goodall -hero of our biosphere. A peak experience was reading from Earth in Human Hands for her and her board. She was kind, humble, great hugger, inspiring, brilliant. Let’s try to live her vision of a world where we care properly for all living creatures.

Just came across these cool artifacts:
“Viking Lander Biological Instrument, Life on Mars” matches. (“The most complex instrument ever flown “)
From a party in Pasadena for the first Mars landing in 1976. Handed down to me by the late, great Shirley Arden (Carl Sagan’s long time assistant).

I can hear the sizzle of newborn stars, and know anything of meaning, of the fierce magic emerging here. I am witness to flexible eternity, the evolving past, and I know we will live forever, as dust or breath in the face of stars, in the shifting pattern of winds.

Today I’m celebrating John Coltrane on what would’ve been his 99th birthday. He was not only one of the great musical geniuses of the 20th century. He had the combination of technical mastery, fearless innovation and deep spirituality that we humans will need to survive and flourish on this earth.
