The operant word there would be "meaningful." If it doesn't fit the story, it shouldn't be there. That's true of all elements of writing.

There are characters I love, but more than that, I love what they can do for their respective stories, especially when utilized in ways I wouldn't always agree with. Sometimes I don't like it, and other times I do. But I always want the creators to have the freedom to do it their way.

It's the Last Jedi-fication of comics: a refusal to look at the whole of the fiction because one aspect isn't catered to your specific tastes, and it's baffling because you're missing out on so much of what makes one of the greatest American artforms so beautiful.

Batman would have to be just one of many. Green Arrow, Blue Beetle, The Question (both of them), Roy, Mr. Terrific, Wildcat--they need people of various talents, intellect, socioeconomic status, race, sexuality, creed, etc. to ensure they have all of humanity's interests in mind.
