I guess it depends on how you use him on those few GP. If he's taking top-6 minutes from a prospect who would otherwise be there, then sure. I personally find it hard to believe that he's capable of doing that, even in the preseason. Vs a contract vet who would almost certainly take those minutes.

I don't think that's the case. They've got plenty of young guys who will get opportunities this fall. Teams have to ice at least 8 "vets" in preseason games, Lucic allows STL to not have to play an actual starter in those. That's overwhelmingly likely where his contribution ends.
