Most of all, listen to clinicians who work in the NHS. We’ll tell you how to make things better - we stare it in the face every day.

Protect against claim culture that makes clinicians over-test out of fear. Educate people on, and instil the responsibility to, self-care. Stop target-setting, it makes care worse. Stop short-term initiatives. A year is not long enough to make and demonstrate any meaningful benefit on anything.

This is the case with the NHS. This is where the govt can intervene. Stop asking so much of the NHS. Be honest about the reality. Stop setting such high public expectations. Get NHSE to stop writing nonsense about early help for viral illness & aspirational vignettes on CT scans that aren’t needed.

When I know appts are coming for pts in secondary care, maybe I’ll start writing and asking the rheum to ‘kindly’ do the diabetic reviews as they are ‘best placed’ and it’s more convenient for the pt. If they could forward on the results of the tests then we’d be grateful.

Sound ludicrous? It is.

That’s quite impressive. (And rather sad.)
