Educational Developer, MA in creative writing
Advocate for inclusive learning, applying psychology/sociology/neuroscience to curriculum and assessment design.
Teaching teachers how to teach.
I love punk rock, comics, and video games.
A wicked case of ADD.
#Psychology question for Psychologists: When does #trauma look like #learning ? And when they do look similar, what distinguishes them?

I'm guessing it's the ability to build on and change what you 'learned' without suffering a massive crisis in the process?

Experts?

Harsh/hilarious facts of being an educational developer. When speaking to #educators about a big endeavor coming down the pipeline, there are 3 goals:

1. Please the teachers in the room
2. Please the leadership in the room
3. Say something meaningful.

You can only count on achieving two of them

Why do I love teaching teachers? Because I get to write things like...

'Student safety and comfort is prioritised while interacting with live patient (cow)'

Y'all...my 2021 paper on the theoretical framework I created for my phd on #gamification , #engagement , & #assessment just hit 100 citations. It's in ResearchGate's top 5 percent of Ed-Psych papers, & at 40k reads, is one of the all time highs for The Journal of Further and Higher Ed. WTF??!!

If you're a hard working educational developer, pedagogic scholar, or dedicated educator, who's not comfortable with dissemination or putting yourself/work out there, these folk create a really safe space. Open minds, big hearts. AND...they will choose a flattering picture of you for the thumbnail.
Very pleased to plug our next Treasure Islands Pedagogies podcast episode #38 www.liverpool.ac.uk/centre-for-i... with Kathy Chandler, Karine Yusuff and Errol Rivera-Jones

It's 7pm on a Friday, and i've just finished work. Sometimes being a teacher feels like it's about righting the wrongs that were done to me as a student. Sometimes, it feels like penance for what I put my teachers through. I guess what I'm saying is...

...The only winner here is Justice.

Was working on my promotion application, when I realized I couldn't find my up-to-date cv. Minutes before the deadline it appears. I jump up to hug my wife, and throw out my back.

I may no longer be the dynamic young teacher.

The second you're in a good flow, someone WILL ask you to "hop on" a quick zoom call.

You wanna watch out for those "hop-on's"...

...you're gonna get some hop-on's.

Advice for the neurodiverse educator:
Avoid the trap of masking to maintain authority. Creating trust and safety doesn't mean you have to be perfect. Shared expectations are more important than authority. So, help your students to expect your humanness, and build the trust and safety from that.

If you're into #inclusivity in #HigherEducation, Centre for Innovation in Education @ Liverpool asks me and 2 amazing colleagues about essential experiences as educators, & 'Welcoming' features heavily. And yes, they named the ep after my Rubik's cube.

Educators, we should collectively try to remember "co-creation" of curriculum isnt just a catch-all term that can mean focus groups or surveys.

It has research-specific roots in making creative partners out of under represented, under privileged students whos learning is risked by the status quo.

Classes, supervisions, talks, meetings, calls, chats, collabs. At a certain point, all you can do is go where you're pointed, try to see what's valuable and interesting about where you've landed, and hope you're clever enough to help who's there.

In Faith in Humanity News, our top story: A student just emailed me to thank and compliment me for a class of mine they attended ASYNCHRONOUSLY.

And other news: thats gonna be the last email I read today. Super sorry if something goes on fire.
