You don't want to spend goddamn forever digging through dirt and wasting time (not just for the mission's sake, but your own sanity) only to end up with a tunnel you can go through one way and not the other (yes it happens) that gets you killed. It's like they don't ACTUALLY test their game.

Yet, players would happily mine minerals if they were one hit (looking at you: gold, phazyonite, bismor, etc) because it's a passive and enjoyable engagement. Instead, we see players wait around for drillers to dig dirt because dirt is tedious and NECESSARY.
