I think there might be the same paradox as with other goods: spending less is easier if you are *not* utterly poor.
My family of 2 people spends CA$ 350 (= US$ 250) per month on groceries.
In 2022, our spending was even lower, US$ 170. It was late COVID, so we were buying only necessities.
