A typewritten letter reads: Dear fellow alumna, Because of my recent book, Class Reunion, and because I am interested in women's progress in the past years, the Ladies' Home Journal has asked me to write an article about what our generation at Radcliffe is thinking today. This brief questionnaire will give me a profile of what has happened to many of us. Would you please take the time to fill it out? I know the results will be helpful not only to all of us but to women all over the country. Thank you. Sincerely, Rona Jaffe ’51 Question: What were your hopes, dreams and expectations when you graduated from college; in terms of work, love and family life? Answer: I intended to work my way around the world selling subscriptions to Business Week on tramp steamers, ending up in Manila where I would marry a Turkish archaeologist and have four children, until the success of my first opera would bring me to the attention of the Department of Philosophy at Harvard, which hired me as a cover for my still classified work for the C.I.A. in Uzebekistan, after which I would divorce my first husband and marry some corporate executives and have some more children and then fulfil my real ambition which is to make jewel-like jars of quince jelly gleaming on the cellar shelves just like Joan Didion, while writing a lot of best-sellers and the definitive study of the works of Ssu-ma Ch'ien. Question: Was there a point in your life where your values, dreams and/or expectations changed? Please explain. Answer: all of a sudden when I was 44 I wanted to smash all the jars of quince jelly and go weave sweat pants of natural fibers on a mountainside in Idaho. I cannot explain this.
