NIH budget was already eroding in real dollar terms. Cutting further means giving up on biotechnology for the next 30 years as talented people move overseas or leave the field entirely. Research now means technology later.
NIH funding from 1950-2019 in 2013 dollars adjusted by the Biomedical Research and Development Price Index, or BRDPI. Graph rises from 0 at 1950 to $20 billion at 2000, then a rapid rise peaking at about $36 billion in 2003, then dropping steadily to $27.7 billion in 2019. Planned increases were cancelled due to austerity in 2010 and sequestration in 2013.
