Snow on the ground in Manchester today. Natural gas flow to our house is noticeably reduced, first time I’ve ever recognised it. Perhaps I’ve spent too much time reading about natural resources and energy sources recently - “The Material World” is my book recommendation of 2024. Fascinating.

Two days of AI summaries on Mac Mail and I've switched them off. Just doesn't work very well, repeats old info and misses important points, occludes real intent of sender. Another note of concern as to how widely applicable LLMs really are.

Apple TV has 10x better than any tv but also 10x worse than most Apple devices.

I would love to switch from Notion and leave it behind forever. It's one of the few SaaS apps I resent paying for, as their UX and dev quality is so low. Is there another "team wiki" app alternative?

Happy New Year BlueSky! “What are you building?” Is one of my favourite questions. I hope you build something great in 2025 - a family, better relationships, better health, a cool robot, new skills, a company, a band, whatever it is. Keep building.

Economist today pointing out GDP in the US and UK shows no significant productivity boost from AI as yet. Completely contradicts the narrative of major companies and those telling us we’re nearing AGI.

LLMs perform poorly on AoC given a simple setup and prompt: www.jerpint.io/blog/advent-...

This matches my experience: LLMs are great for boiler plate and faster-than-usual stack overflow, but often more of a hindrance than a help for task-specific code.

The biggest problem with discussions around #AI is that far too many people have incentives to misrepresent the facts. It’s very difficult to find anyone you can truly trust, because incentives are so misaligned. Even policy researchers want the money to keep flowing.

New Century still have tickets for tables in their bar for NYE. Shame they’re not doing a NYE event and didn’t announce earlier as we’ve made other plans, but a good last minute shout for Mancunians. Love that venue.

I've been unwell over Christmas, so I rewatched the Matrix trilogy. That was an upside. The downside was I also watched the fourth film in the series.

Scary quote from the film below:

Our startup basically runs on Keynote. Is there anything it can’t do? Such a joy to use, I hope the team at Apple are proud of themselves. #Apple #Keynote #Startups

We've been using Google Cloud for a few years and recently started using AWS. GCP is much better - better service, better organised, better tech. Given the choice, I'd always go for GCP. #Startups #Cloud
