I realize there is chaos in the work, but we rehomed three hens (two Plymouth Rocks and one Easter egger) and got out first egg this evening. #chickens #eggs

A swarm chose another two-deep hive box to settle in this week. Crazy that the lower box had bad frames. Moved in anyway. Inspected today. Queen ✅ Gave them a better set of frames and a new box.

Second swarm in two weeks in our yard. I have never seen a two-deep open bottom swarm trap, but the scouts and queens of the two hives we have now appear to think they are well-stocked tree holes. Never a dull moment with honey bees. #beekeeping

Inspected swarm that took up residence in our stray boxes last week. Thriving: lots of honey, pollen, larvae and capped brood. Switched out bottom board (leaning). Will move to the spot in our yard where they belong and add honey super next week or so. #beekeeping #honeybee

We lost all our hives (5) last summer. Yesterday, my wife sent message: lots of bees on the side of the house. I figured it was like the previous three weeks. But nope, she saw the swarm finding its way into the hive boxes. For the recorded, the bees chose the worst comb to settle on. #beekeeper

Eight years since publication and four since second edition, royalty statement arrived via email today. One copy sold last year.

Still proud of the work, and I wish more people read the boat because it makes sense of some things today

A few weeks later the book arrived at our house with the inscription and post-it note from Marty. The book sits on my shelf with other books that shaped my thinking.

Martin E. Marty, historian of American religion, passed away February 25, 2025. I once drove Marty from the airport to a keynote address he was to give in Richmond. On the way back to airport, I shared that *A Cry of Absence* played a significant role in my life. He thanked me for sharing.

honeybees do strange things sometimes. Traps all around and this hive decides oh the empty box next to the house works. Their adaptation skills are incredible to watch, particularly when they overcome incredible odds

Today felt a bit like restoration and grace. Last fall after an entirely crappy year dealing with lots of family health and job issues, I lost all seven of my honeybee hives. The bees provide me balance when the world is out of it. A swarm made a home yesterday in an abandoned hive box. It is beauty
