Taught on Therese Raquin this morning - probably the text I've most enjoyed teaching since I started my job at Essex. In celebration, please enjoy this line from the novel.

Fun fact I spotted: Prince Andrew’s officially-declared income is sufficiently low that, were he not British, Kemi Badenoch would deport him for being below the threshold to be a fiscal contributor.

My hotel room for the past few nights was clearly once the main room of a small cottage. V charming but there’s something poignant in what must have been once the living space for a family now being the standard for a single traveller. Like an inadvertent encroachment on the dignity of past lives.

A friend took this picture of my car recently, which I think is looking handsome on the hill.

Walking past all that remains of the infamous ‘tax evader’ graffiti from a couple of news cycles ago. How quickly things move, and fade.

The irony I can’t help (perhaps tediously) pointing out here is that in the UK taking your coffee (or tea, obvs) with milk is traditionally the blue-collar male thing to do, while drinking it black is the sign of being in the metropolitan elite.

Had a great time seeing Stereophonic last night - a superbly acted show that is a slow build but powerful, and which trusts its audience’s intelligence much more than most stuff in the West End these days.

Had a nice visit today to Parham House near Storrington, a very dreamy Elizabethan house with an equally dreamy walled garden.

Very much enjoying getting into Laura Columbino’s Kazuo Ishiguro and Ethics, one of the most original pieces of new work on Ishiguro I’ve read in a while. It’s already making me think about a few things differently (and giving some insights I wish I had come up with myself!).

At Windsor today, having a look at the East Terrace garden following the King’s makeover of it (fourth pic shows how it used to look for comparison). King Charles is famously more interested in gardens than his mother was and it certainly shows here.

Just down the road, cute little Shoreham Airport (officially ‘Brighton City Airport’) with its perfectly-preserved 1930s terminal. Understandably in demand as a film location.

Had an enjoyable visit to The Edwardians at the King’s Gallery. Highlights included an edition of Oscar Wilde’s poems sent to future Edward VII (with note encouraging attention to The Garden of Eros!) and Alexandra’s stunning coronation dress (portrait to the left shows the dress in unfaded glory).

Had a fun visit to the ‘Splash! A Century of Swimming and Style’ exhibition @designmuseum.bsky.social. Pictured: Tom Daley’s Olympics trunks; Yusra Mardini’s swim cap; Pamela Anderson’s Baywatch swimsuit, among other historic swimwear. Fascinating look at swimming in fashion, art, and architecture.

Since Warwick’s branding is all over here, please enjoy my mug with the old branding from Warwick’s golden era, i.e. when I was there.
