The present partisan divide defies logic in the Catholic tradition as we truly are ONE family. If our leaders could begin to see the issues facing its own “family”members maybe we would try harder to care for them and work for effective structure adjustments to help each member thrive!

Let’s imagine a world where the dignity of each person is protected and defended. In the present reading the news I am struck by the relevance and cogency of Catholic Social teaching to inform our stance and response to layered violence against any number of groups needing dignity protected.

Consider another tactic to political conversation: tell a story of how your life is affected. Share your feelings and details that stick with people! These stories have inherent power to change hearts esp. when people know you! Tell your story! #educatedcitizens

Today, the first snow fell. Beauty invited me to stop, notice, slow my pace inside, and….go bake bread! We all have a spiritual practice. What’s yours?

NYT report that the market may curb the next president in choices as money is a central value connected to his identity. As Black Friday shopping surges, consider that our simple choices (or choosing not to buy) has an effect on the incoming presidency. More civic- conscious citizens needed.

There are always intended and unintended outcomes with each decision made. Knowing this, we must act with highest ethical standards in personal, professional, and civic life. As we read of tariffs to come on our “neighbors” it may be challenging to imagine this real dichotomy. My brothers farm. 😞

Are you experiencing anxiety with the appointments and headlines? Richard Rohr, spirituality writer and director suggests a practice: I recommend a serious fast from cable and internet news. The amygdala cannot process this much negativity, misinformation, opinion, and paranoia. It gets hooked.

Leaders in higher education can sometimes be insulated from advocating for students in political structures, but now is a time to step up and get politically engaged. The fear for some is that it draws attention to the institution or can affect vital donor dollars, yet we do it for students.

My youngest leaves the hospital today and asks to shower to shed the sanitary scent that pervades everything. We made that happen and I’m doing the laundry. We talked of the next chapter of recovery and life ahead. Life is precious! Celebrate our children in their own vulnerabilities.

Read John Rawls’ “A Theory of Justice” many years ago and this has shaped my appreciation for justice and action when helping others sort through challenging social issues. We need ideas like this to help ask good questions about our current socio-political sail winds.

Walking through surgery recovery with my youngest adult child. Read a chapter to them from Michael Singer’s book - the untethered soul:the journey beyond yourself. It’s hard to lay in a hospital bed and not hear the voices in your head speak irrationally. Clarity is the gift of this book.

Time to travel and reflect on my place in the creation as my parents have passed, on the edge of 60, and the world needs repair. Holding silent vigil as I drink my coffee each morning and make at least one life better each day! Italy bound soon to visit Rome and Pompeii.
