It's a pleasure to be at the University of Tours for a conference on the future of the Conservative Party, in memory of our colleague Agnés Alexandre-Collier.

The @psaconservatism.bsky.social specialist group is also sponsoring a roundtable on the future of British conservatism.

Spent the morning geeking out on the Dutch elections - a bad night for Geert Wilders, but not as bad for the populist radical right generally.

We also saw some shuffling among the centre - collapse of the Christian democratic NSC boosted the CSA and liberal D66.

Celebrating my final day of being 32 by hosting an academic workshop at @livunipol.bsky.social for our upcoming book 'The Truss and Sunak premierships: the challenges of party renewal in the post-Johnson Conservative Party', with @andrewcrines.bsky.social.

Liverpool might seem solidly Labour but Reform could soon become the city's main opposition.

This map shows 2nd-placed parties from the 2014/15 local elections - north Liverpool is almost as purple as our wheelie bins (...and might explain Dan Carden’s shift towards blue Labour)

Some highlights:
🛐 Most MPs are classed as Christian, but a sizable number have no religion
📖 MPs used 14 different texts to swear in, from the Bible (in various forms) to the Quran, Bhagavad Gita, and affirmation on no text
📈 Assisted dying voting patterns differ by religion

Using a mix of religious group memberships, public statements, and swearing-in texts, I’ve classified the religion of every current MP.

You can explore:
📚Which religious texts MPs used to swear in
🎚️How religious affiliation links to AD votes
📊Religion by party
...and more!

🚨Today, MPs are voting on assisted dying.

Religion plays a key role in this debate - but until now, we haven’t had good public* data on MPs’ religious affiliations.

So I built a dashboard to fix that:

Very glad that my article 'Competing Disraeli-isms: Tory Democracy and One-Nation Conservatism' is now out in Cahiers victoriens et édouardiens

(and here's me meeting the man himself in Ormskirk on Saturday)

Liverpool half-marathon was amazing - got round in 1:22:43, shaving 5 mins off my pb from 2014 (though running past my flat was mentally tough...)

Very excited to be running to be a trustee of the @polstudiesassoc.bsky.social - an association that has opened so many doors for me and massively enriched my academic career.

Here's my pitch 👇🏻 happy to answer any questions members might have, publically or via DMs.

They say things move slowly in academic publishing, but just *four* months after the Tory leadership election concluded our article - Backing Badenoch: The Conservative Party Leadership Election of 2024 - has been accepted for publication in Parliamentary Affairs 🥳🥳

Had a great time talking to the (packed out!) Liverpool History Society about the decline of Tory Liverpool and the potential for Reform to make an impact in the city.

Reminder about my talk to the Liverpool History Society, 11am, Tuesday 18th Feb @ The Adelphi on... unsurprisingly... 'Whatever Happened to Tory #Liverpool?'

Back in June I finished the Challenge Salou #triathlon and later found out I'd somehow qualified for the European championships in Slovakia in May - which was very exciting...

...until today, when I actually have to start the training, so goodbye social life.

Emma Hardy MP decided to 'actively abstain' on assisted suicide by voting in both lobbies.

Annoying Hansard is reporting her vote twice, so 330 Ayes/275 Noes/4 tellers/42 abstain = 651/650 MPs. Really should be 329(+2 tellers) v 274(+2 tellers) v 43 abstain.

Why do this?!?

And, because both major parties distrust local government and see it as amateurish (as if central government covers itself in glory on the daily) local government has comparatively little power (data from local-autonomy.andreasladner.ch)
November 26, 2024 at 2:08 PM
No wonder local government feels distant to most people when the councils we have represent *so* many people, compared to other nations - Czechia has 1/6th of the population of England but 20x as many councils!
November 26, 2024 at 2:08 PM
County council turnout was kept artificially high by holding them alongside general elections. When the elections are not concurrent, their turnout drops to the same level as 'lower' tiers.
November 26, 2024 at 2:08 PM
These are terrible reforms - counties don't have more engagement than districts so they're not more democratic, England is really under-governed, and our local authorities lack autonomy

We need *more* local government - and more trust in local government - not less

Excited to be in St George's Hall (for the first time!) for the @livuniheseltine.bsky.social annual lecture to hear from Andy Burnham and Steve Rotherham on their views on the future of the North, where next for metro mayoral devolution, and the wine reception.

🚨Are 3 new by-elections coming our way?🚨

By my reckoning, 3 MPs didn't follow the swearing-in procedure correctly & shouldn't be voting - Ben Maguire, Liz Saville Roberts, and Torcuil Crichton.

They could all face a £500 fine and have to vacate their seats.
