If men want to rape us they do not need to “pretend” to be women to get into our toilets or our changing rooms. They can just…rape us, in those spaces or other public spaces or in our workplaces or our homes, and they can be statistically pretty certain that they will never face punishment for this.

We also make 6 recommendations to inform future research & practice & support equity in healthcare provision:

1. Provide clear information on pain to enable informed decision-making and consent 

2. Don't downplay/ignore procedure pain

3. Prioritise diversity & inclusion in written/verbal info

➡️ Negative and judgmental attitudes were as big a problem as pain itself  
➡️ Gender norms and power dynamics had a silencing effect 
➡️ Negative perceptions of health professionals follow from painful experiences  
➡️ Self-advocacy is challenging and should not be necessary in this context
