50 odd years ago, most of my A Level French class were also doing English including Pride and Prejudice. A French language assistante asked us what “entail” meant and became increasingly baffled by our confident explanation of the legal term. Turned out she’d heard the phrase “this would entail…”.

In most cases they won’t be adding to their overall savings but shifting money from existing taxable savings to ISAs. Many of today’s pensioners were caught out by the years of low interest rates which kept interest below the tax exempt limit and didn’t bother setting up ISAs.

Investment is a long-term commitment which pays off over time but can see big short-term fluctuations. That’s why it would be unfair to apply the cash ISA limit to pensioners who need certainty and have no opportunity to earn more if the value of their savings falls.
