Today I taught students about the realist paradigm and the variants, like classical realism, structural realism, and neoclassical realism. It's always fun to see how students respond to its axioms.

For those interested in war and conflict, a classic must-read is Fearon's "rationalist explanations for war" article. Essentially, a lot of war results from uncertainty about each state's capabilities and resolve, and inability to credibly commit to a bargain.
