Tigers are auspicious in Japan, but they aren’t native. Inspired by Chinese scrolls and legends, traditional Japanese artists who’d never seen tigers used imagination to design “tigers”. Based on that, a young girl paints stripes onto a scowling beast surrounded by whimsically designed tigers(?).
