Who else is watching the fantastic #Empire series by @davidolusoga.bsky.social? It was a pleasure to be involved in this - dangerous and disease-ridden #prisonhulks were used in England for 80 years from 1776, propping up the rotten system of convict transportation. Check out episode 2 for more!

...then I finally got to carry out some in-person research at The National Archives of Ireland and visited Dún Laoghaire, where convict hulks were moored from 1825-1837

I started 2025 with a month-long stay at the wonderful @kuleuvenuniversity.bsky.social as a Leuven Centre for Irish Studies visiting fellow - researching the lives and experiences of Irish convicts in Bermuda - amazing town, tried every cake imaginable
