Typically, more rural / small town people in America are much friendlier than people in big cities, and often get looked at funny for general politeness when they're in the city. Most people in cities (think NYC and Philly) keep their heads down and ignore everyone around them.

I visited the UK for several weeks many years ago, and the difference between, say, Yorkshire and London was a stark one. Even as an American, this video had me in stitches. We have our own idiosyncrasies about this behavior in cities here, too.
