I seem to recall Dr. Isaac Asimov wrote an article about how such a thing would work. This would be back in the mid-1970's or earlier (when I was a kid and a sci-fi nerd). It would be cool to see how his prediction matches up to current knowledge.

Strike from above. I slow-mo'd the first frames and found the missile. I thought it was kind of small until it exploded. Airburst just before impact, so a charge that blows a hole that the payload follows with greater effect? Anyway, kabloooie!
