Early on they were using caddies to hold CD's, sort of like PSP UMD's have, but without the hole cut in them. Those protected CD's really well.
But CD audio sound *is* good. What's wrong with it?

Lossless audio, at a sampling rate adequate to pass nyquist theorem threshold for human hearing frequency reproduction. Cheap to manufacture. Easy to make copies of.

I like vinyl and stuff, too, but CD's are a good format (even if DAT is better).
