It's sometimes a little annoying when Lord of the Rings is painted as a purely simple story of good triumphing over evil because the entire last section of Return of the King is devoted to the idea that there is no clean ending to war.

Sometimes I remember that LotR only became a success like 10 years after it was published, and that, in general, JRRT’s UK publisher was extremely supportive of his (for the time) weird ass books, and that today’s authors are unlikely to get the same kind of support.
