For the record I put together my new board, put on all my safety gear, and then immediately crashed into a tree hard. Thankfully Helmet-senpai kept me safe :3

How many pushups did you need to do for it to work?

For me tho - understanding how groups form helps me make better choices about when and with whom I spend my time trying to build connections.

Not every storm should be
weathered.

But once the rain clears and healthy norming is present you can also reduce the severity of future storms.

I'm thinking about that really strong deep bond with other people. I personally believe it is only attainable after storming.

Some groups are loose enough (like mtg at the shop) they're always in a forming phase. Which is not strongly connected.

And storming fractures off people sometimes.

Now the tricky part.

Almost every change to a group repeats this cycle.

There's always going to be some storming involved. The trick becomes understanding where the group is at when I enter - during forming before storming starts.

And then am I comfortable with how the storming is going?

Norming - this is where the enmeshment of the group actually starts.

People have communicated enough and been around each other enough to start to feel comfortable. At this stage, friction is typically resolved or has an agreed way to handle disagreements or hurt feelings.

Storming - This is the rough part, and typically when I decide if I'm gonna stay in a group or leave.

As people start to assert themselves during activities or engagement with the group - there's friction. Not everyone gets along, this is where I feel a lot of people run into fit issues.

Forming - this is when the group initially is created or changes occur. This can happen with you or without you. Typically unstructured and lacks a unified direction amongst all members.

So an example is tagging along with a new group to go get lunch. Easy, low stakes but no deep bonds yet.

A thought that came to me this evening before bed.

Have you worked with agile practices? It's usually very clinically corporate but there is a good triangle I like from Scrum.

Forming, Storming, and Norming - the three stages of group (team in scrum) formation.

It's hard to find the right group, it definitely takes time and effort to settle into one.

Imo there's never a group that is 100% a fit. Nor a full obligation, I have mtg friends I don't see outside of the card shop.

Pants always have a stitch out of place, but that doesn't mean they don't fit.
