walking the love interest home after the first date (aka three days after no-strings sex weekend)
"So," Jean says, eyes dancing with glee. "Yeah." Reiner says. "Someone has to say it." Reiner remembers uttering these exact words, half-hard in his car as they discussed boundaries. And other things. He didn't want that someone to be him, then. Didn't want to seem pushy, in case he'd misunderstood. Now, he's not sure what it is Jean wants him to say. Date over, time to switch to their night personas? Should he be keeping up the game, find a semi-clever way to be invited inside and blend those two aspects of the relationship together? He doesn't know what Jean wants him to say. Inexplicably, that doesn't bother him. So he says, "I want to kiss you." Because it's true. Because it hasn't stopped being true since the last time he said it. "Fucker," Jean growls, and in his tone Reiner recognizes the faint blush of embarrassment. "May I?" he asks, tilting forward, staring at Jean's face in the street light. "Fucking-- yes already, why are you--" The sentence dies on Reiner's lips. He keeps it light, at first; a first date kind of kiss, easy to break away from.

If he ever gets to write his memoirs, he'll say he locked this thought away the moment he heard the identity of the Armored Titan. The truth is he only managed it a few days later, after the mere sound of his voice failed to convince Reiner to turn himself in for torture and vivisection. (But Even Ymir left Historia behind that day, so really, what chance did he have?) But enough people knew, even back then, that in the frenzy of preparation to go and chase after the four --four!-- Titan shifters from the 104th about to escape humanity's reach, the Commander himself was informed. It's hard to forget that Jean's first conversation with Erwin Smith after availing himself of his mission in Stohess started not with a commendation but with 'I hear you were... close, with one of them. If you come with us, can we trust you to do what is needed?' Hard to forget the lack of reaction when he stumbled over his persistent denial and bruised ego to try and reassess his loyalty to the Scouts. The silence, engulfing despite the activity all around them, until Captain Levi grunted and Erwin nodded at Jean, both sanction and dismissal. Sometimes when his chest hurts for no apparent reason he thinks it might be phantom bruising from how hard he saluted.

"I'm telling you you're free. You don't owe it to anyone to keep hating him." Free. He fucking hates that word. Jean never cared for being free, not as an absolute. Free from his mother's incessant nagging, sure. Free from pointless, ungraded training. But the sky of Trost never bothered him, hemmed in as it was. Grueling training aside, the structure of the military suited him well. The life he imagined for himself was on rails, smooth and predetermined. According to Eren, that makes him no better than cattle. But so what? His opinions were always trash anyway; Jean hates the concept of freedom as Eren uses it. Jean does not hate Reiner Braun.

Reiner doesn't laugh. He should have laughed, that was excellent delivery. Instead his eyes well up with an unbearable tenderness that Jean is already well acquainted with, the kind that takes him by surprise at the most unexpected moments, that makes open secrets threaten to spill out unchecked. Reiner licks his lips, leaving them parted. Coward that he is, Jean leans in to kiss them.

"Sometimes I think I've dreamt you up," Reiner says quietly. It's a little sweet, a little dumb. Jean has many fine qualities, and he's been trying, but that hardly makes him dream material; Reiner's smarter than that. Still... "What times are those, then?" he asks, going for playful. But Reiner remains serious. "Usually when I'm about to wake up," he says, and really, Jean's had too many heart squeezes this weekend. "You'll change your mind the first time I catch a cold and you insist on staying to help even when I'm telling you to leave me alone," he quips. "I've been told I can be a bit of a nightmare." Reiner doesn't laugh, doesn't turn into him. He sits up against the headboard. "I'm okay, Jean," he says a propos of nothing. To Jean's raised eyebrow, he amends: "stable, at least. Thanks to you." "Good." What the hell else is he supposed to say to that? Reiner averts his eyes. "So, you can go." Jean's eyebrows furrow. "Huh? Go where?" And then he gets it, an unpleasant chill making his spine straighten. "Fuck you," he bites off. "If you want me gone then--" "I never want you gone," Reiner interrupts, his voice bearing the steadiness of the tightly controlled. "Then shut the fuck up," Jean sneers. "How little do you think of me?" Reiner shakes his head, looking pained. Like he has any right, after pulling this shit. "It's not about what I think of you. You didn't sign up for any of this. I'm trying to give you an out." "And you think I want one because you think so highly of me," Jean snarls. Part of him is sending warning signs insisting he's going about this the wrong way. The vast majority of him prickles at being dismissed so easily. "Or that I'd need your permission."

"That's stupid," Jean says. "You can't change the future if you know what it is." He's thirteen and lying in the grass with a half dozen other cadets, arranged in a circle with their heads in the center, staring up at the stars. They need to get up and go to dinner but training was especially grueling and they're all just taking a moment to rest. And arguing about hypotheticals. "Why not," someone asks, offended. Jean is shocked to find he doesn't remember the boy's name. He died in training, he does remember that. But not much else. Not even this conversation. "If you know what's going to happen then you can alter it for a better outcome." "If you change it then what you knew wasn't the future, it was *a possible* future. And we all have possible futures in our heads, it's called having a functioning brain." There are some snickers. Not necessarily in agreement, he knows now. Simply to mark that Jean was the nastier shit-talker. "Would you two stop already," someone dares to say. Mina? "No one knows the future anyway." And then a shadow falling on them. "I know the future isn't looking good if you guys don't get a move on." They all groan but get up, because when Reiner Braun tells you to get going, you get going. Jean finds himself staring at him. So young, and already carrying so much. And none of them ever knew. "You were right," Eren says behind him. "Once you know the future you can't change it." Jean shakes himself out of his nostalgia to look back at him as the memory around them fades into sand. "You don't know that," he argues. Because this is Eren and if Eren says white, Jean will say black. That's how they work. "I do know that." He sounds tired, all of a sudden. "I've tried everything, Jean. This happens. I'm no more in control than you are." "Everything, huh?" And it's anger again. *How dare you show me better days, how dare you now tell me I'm right?* He contains it. Mostly. "Everything, like talking to us about it? Hange, Armin, Mikasa? Me? Did it ever occur to you that all of us combined are smarter than just *you*?"
