Woke before light. The vinebeetles were at it again chewing through the edge-rows of dryleaf despite the scent wards. I told Pell to upend the mulch beds last week, but he’s still green, bless him, and nervous around the root-gnats. I’ll have to show him again tomorrow. Some things can’t be learned from scrolls. We walked the upper terraces with a guest from the Librarium—young, round-faced, spoke like he’d never held a spade. Said he was mapping historical yield patterns. I told him the only pattern that matters is how the moons tilt and whether the soil sings when you press your thumb to it. He wrote that down. I hope he never forgets it. Midday brought cloud cover, and the elder squash finally split bloom. Deep cycle fruit, long as my forearm, with skin like wet stone. The fieldhands cheered. They know what that means: stews for the week, and ferment for the next. We’ll trade the spiced mash to the Hearthkeepers come marketday. Maybe get a sharpening token or two in return.
