Unlike Tales of Legendia, it was playable. I can't remember what it was about Legendia that felt off but I just couldn't keep with it, I think it was my first Tales game after ToS.

I do need to replay abyss at some point, refinished the remaster of vesperia a few months ago.

The writing for, the skits at least, was good, I can't say that I remember any from ToS1.

I can't remember the original super well but i recall the worlds feeling a bit, empty, if you have to backtrack for things you've missed, that sounds like something they improved in Replaylee, did you notice this at all?
