Yes. So misinforming adults who smoke about the relative risks reduces smoking cessation and keeps those who try nicotine vapes in the dual use phase of their transition longer.

And US public health agencies are NOT helping reduce adult misperceptions.

New FDA report: Teen nicotine use is now at an all-time low; teen use of cigarettes is at a "historic low" (near nil); teen use of nicotine vapes is down 70% to a 10-year low.

US teen nicotine use:
-deadly cigarette use has dropped 90% to near zero
-safer nicotine vape use is now at a 10-year low
(less than half the number who smoked in 2011)
-nicotine use from any source is now at a 50-year low
(down 49% over the past decade)

The VA is slow to adopt vaping for harm reduction, though they admit cigarettes are more harmful. Smokefree.gov states: "You may want to consider quitting cigarettes first due to the many health harms from smoking cigarettes."

The VA acknowledges harm reduction as "part of a continuum of options that helps reduce the risk of death and other negative health consequences from substance use," yet it stops short of exploring vaping as a tool for smoking cessation. This needs to change.
