I like white for this work, which you can totally pull off with enamels or oils on natural wood. Also, some craft stores make premixed aged wood stain, which may be worth a shot.

This is one of those kits that really benefits from streaking effects on those big slab sides. Very nicely done!

Whichever colors you choose, I'd de-saturate it A LOT for that moody, creepy vibe.
