I remember hearing Shellenberger guest lecture at UCB when their outfit was just getting started, and thinking OMG, these guys are dangerous.

100% agreement with this - My Latinx family and in-laws include lots of working class, high school educated folks, many of whom scrambled their way into the middle class via jobs in the prison industry. Others who did not either took their chances in construction or some such, or remained poor.

Correction: The administration is CLAIMING that they have discretion regarding back pay. Nevertheless, the Government Employee Fair Treatment Act of 2019 clearly states that federal employees must receive back pay after a shutdown ends. www.nbcnews.com/politics/tru...

I grew up there and may end up there. It’s a great place. Amazing landscape and skies (and 4 seasons, thank you very much), many scars from colonization and the Cold War, an amazing array of intact and distinct cultures, economy totally based on oil and the military.

This is silly. NM has four seasons, including intense monsoon rains and a burgeoning ski industry.
