Life is pretty challenging right now 😓
My daughter took this pic of a little friend that comes visit us around 7pm each evening. I hope it makes you smile as much as it did us.

Took these quick pics today to help someone out with an ID, so if you've ever wondered what the quadrate bone of the allis shad (Alosa alosa) looks like, wonder no more! ❤️🐟🦴

I made a cake for my daughter's birthday tomorrow 🎂🌻
Well, a tiny cake and 7 buns technically, I guess!
11 years old, gifted with SATs exams all week! 😅

😍🦴💮 On first glance, I thought this was intricately decorated bone, but the surface pattern is almost certainly caused by fungal growth! 🍄‍🟫🍄
So beautiful! ❤️🦴

A level archaeology no longer exists 😢 But I had so much fun and this 2-year course gave me an amazing head start for my degrees in archaeology, which focussed on plants and animals ❤️

Oh a bird skull! 🤩🐦💀
Nope, nope, wait. It's gum. 😂

Petrosal bones of domestic cattle (left) and equid (right, probably domestic horse).
As well as being species diagnostic, they are also a good element to note because of their dense bone structure that preserves genetic material well 🐄🐎🦴🧬

Well hi there wee fella 🙂🦴
I'm glad one of us is smiling.

Beautiful example of oak (Quercus) wood charcoal (x40 magnification). Rocking the ring-porous.
You can compare with English oak wood (Quercus robur) here:

Right occipital condyle of a horse of course! 💀🐎🦴

(well, equid, but that doesn't rhyme. It's most likely a horse, but donkey or mule can't be ruled out!)

The only Equid bone for this context!

Baaaaaaayybeeeee pig, du doo, du do du doo 😂🦴🐖👶

Humerus of a young pig. Archaeological example on the left, recent reference specimen on the right ❤🦴

I share my office with a #sherdnerd My favourite thing is his reference collection. Wee snips of pot, 100s, nay 1000s of them, sorted by ware type & location! This is only part of his reference collection just for Roman period York 🤩😱

I'm just jealous. His collection smells way better than mine 😆🦴

OK! Yellow circle is a furcula/wishbone of an Anatidae bird - something like a goose 🪿
Blue circles a fish - a premaxilla (upper jaw) and a dentary (lower jaw). If you send close ups of these I should be able to get an ID for you.
The big vertebra looks like deer or cattle.

The famous blue whale jaw bones in Whitby, North Yorkshire. A reminder of industries past. Framing St Mary's church and the abbey ruins in the distance 🩷☀️🩵
