Considering that all of Clockwork’s ‘lessons’ tended to be painful enough to bruise, and Clockwork’s world-saving assistance tended to come only at the most dire of hours, Phantom wasn’t often interested in…gifts.

Does it because he wants to. Because he likes it. Not because he has to. Right? Those thoughts echoed through his head on his way to Casper, over and over until he couldn’t think anything else. One big, jumbled pile weighed down by a single, desperate plea: I want to hunt ghosts. An hour ago, he would have said yes, instantly, of course. He likes his powers, enjoys using them, has fun with Sam and Tucker. He wants to do it, regardless of the voice in the back of his mind reminding him that the ghost situation is his fault. Or Sam’s casual remarks about responsibility and doing what’s right. Or the fact that no one else has the power to do what he does. He does it because he wants to. Shockingly, that does not get more believable the louder he screams it.
