Funny enough, I was brought to this thread from another one that started with an interview Zoe Saldana did on one of the late night talk shows. I had a similar thought.

That’s not what I or the OP said. He said that whether an actor is identifiable is an example of the movie not having cultural impact. Your response is also wrong because Avatar is also quoted and easily ID’d by the general public. “I see you”, “my Jake”, and even the hissing is quoted and parodied.

By this standard, none of Cameron’s movies have “cultural impact”. Robert Patrick is a cast member on a currently running, well-rated show and most people couldn’t tell you who he is based on his name even if they’ve seen T2 and Peacemaker.

The hypocrisy is mind-blowing. It’s the literal celebration of the birth of an illegal alien who was seeking asylum from the militarization of his parents’ home. If it had happened today, they’d be cheering ICE.

The problem with the whole “distraction” thought experiment is that it assumes these things are planned as distractions. They’re not. These people don’t know what they’re doing but every new disaster is worse than the previous one so the media runs with it. That’s what’s distracting.
