How many times do journalists get told "meta analyses are the gold standard for evidence"? (Often accompanied by "you shouldn't write about science until it's peer-reviewed and published.)

Hmmmm....

Really interesting paper, despite the outrageous labelling of crabs as 'non-charismatic'.

Looking forward to this @cghe.bsky.social‬ webinar in an hour, but the way the email reminder appears in my inbox makes it sound rather ominous...

There was surprisingly little discussion of the final text coming out of UNOC3 in Nice. Maybe it's not surprising, as the text is largely a rehash of past promises. As an experiment, I asked ChatGPT for the final text of the next UNOC meeting. Here's hoping we make more progress than AI expects.

Wild 12 hours in Chagos-related news. The Chagossian people really deserve better than this.

This has been my experience anecdotally too, although not as strong as 100%. Academic papers in fisheries seem to be skewing towards 'fishers' slightly (with the huge caveat that I may have done something wrong with this scopus search as it was a five minute job this morning before my 2nd coffee).

“Beware job titles containing the words ‘innovation’, ‘business’, ‘policy adviser’ or ‘officer’. In research institutes, and society in general, it seems the more directly one’s work benefits people (in our case researchers), the less one is paid for it and the more understaffed that role will be.”

Journalists criticising journalists on social media is pretty unedifying, but it's hard to let this pass. So disappointing to see UK support for aquaculture that helps local people and supplies food to the UK presented as a "crazy project".

They don't seem to be on Bluesky yet, but I want to thank the Lizard Island Reef Research Foundation for introducing me to the 'shamefaced crab' in their last newsletter. Top species name.
