PhD candidate at the University of Bonn 🌱 Interested in everything climate, loss and damage, adaptation, inequality, and intersectional theory 🌎
We describe our (slightly) different methodologies in detail. In Fiji, illustrated value cards were used by researchers to better convey each value and support discussion.

I appreciate the author's idea of leaving quotes in their original language, so that meaning is not lost in translation, and putting English versions in endnotes. But in some places that will just result in unreadable pages where I'm going back and forth all the time.

From 'At Risk: natural hazards, people's vulnerability and disasters'. Published nearly two decades ago and, day by day, becoming increasingly relevant.

You can call me a 'climate catalyst' as well because I'm also not flying private (from the TIME100 most influential climate leaders list).

A reminder that already in 1991, more than 30 years ago, Vanuatu voiced an urgent need for climate reparations.

Does anyone know what 'prima instantiapertractis' might mean? At first I thought it was a classic case of researchers using overly complicated Latin terms to make their texts unreadable, but 'instantiapertractis' only gives 3 Google results. So I wonder what is up here...

Very worrying article, but good to see how some scientists are using more urgent language

The Dutch representative tried to exclude civil society from the next meeting of the Transitional Committee on the Loss and Damage Fund.

It is not surprising that someone born into royalty does not see value in voices for ordinary people.

I still cannot believe how Non-Economic Loss and Damage —which includes the loss of cultures and more-than-human life — is defined in this (influential) UNFCCC report.

How can you deduce these crucial and highly personal elements of life as 'the remainder of items that are not economic items'?

This paragraph from @lisaschipper.bsky.social's PhD thesis shows how similar the late 90s/early 00s adaptation and the current Loss and Damage discourse are.

It being perceived as defeatist, no accepted definition, the fear for less mitigation commitments. Same story all over...

Oh wow I haven't thought about intercontinental livestock transport? Maybe you are aware already, but this is a livestock boat. Why on earth would there be a need for this?

I recently wondered how horses are transported for international competitions. How strange is it that human development has led to this?

Joined another XR road blockade in The Hague. Thousands of people protested as the Dutch government continues to fund the fossil fuel industry.

Many blockades might follow, as XR plans to block this crucial road in The Hague every day until their needs are met! ❤️‍🔥

A big benefit of doing a geography PhD in Bonn seems to be having an office next to, and reading in, the botanical garden 🌱

Together with that of 1.840 other concerned citizens, my name was in a Dutch national newspaper last Saturday.

After the conviction of 7 rebels of sedition, we asked people to join an XR highway blockade in The Hague as our government continues to spend billions on fossil fuel subsidies every year.
