State supreme courts are important in our democracy. The public *should* know about these elections. But at a time when that public needs to be confident that judges are capable of holding their allies accountable to the law, it is not great that dark money ads are a primary source of info. 7/

The messaging in the race says a lot about judicial politics today: PJF’s ads say the state supreme court is the “last line of defense” against attacks on abortion, which is legal in PA “thanks to Justices Donohue, Dougherty, & Wecht” 4/

Blame it on a mix of lagging reporting, weakly enforced rules, and a campaign finance system that requires little transparency.

At $16 million in campaign spending, the PA retention elections are the second most expensive retention elections ever. But the justices themselves have only raised $4 million, the bulk of the spending is by outside interest groups. 2/
