My Mom never asked me what I wanted for dinner.

After complaining that I wasn't getting enough playing time for one of my hs teams my Dad said, "Every team needs players on the bench."

My parents helped me realize that I really wasn't as important as I thought I was. Thank you, Mom & Dad.

“I don’t know.”

No bluffing, no bravado—one of the best coaches in all of sports willing to admit uncertainty on one of the biggest stages. In that moment, she modeled a kind of confidence we need more of in leadership.

“I don’t know” doesn’t make you weak—it makes you real.

What if we entered conflict by asking ourselves, "What can I learn from this person? How might I grow from this conversation?"

Disagreement and conflict potentially good for us. As David McRaney writes, consider them a "feature" of the human condition that propels our species forward.

Don't put yourself in a bubble during these trying times, or ever. Be curious about those who disagree with you instead of avoiding them.

So many great leadership lessons from General Eisenhower in "The Light of Battle" from Michael Paradis. Worth a read if you're interested in WWII history or how to be an effective leader in a complex environment with enormous egos all around you.
