Yeah, agreed. It‘s a terrible and awkward movie with paper-thin characters and the plot of a bad video game.
And my SW ranking is: 1. SW,
2. Andor, 3. ESB

The Flaubert is very similar to Nietzsche's 'That for which we find words is something already dead in our hearts'

I love this: 'fullness of soul can sometimes overflow in utter vapidity of language'. So true for all of us, and a very humane reminder of the depths of feeling we can often miss in our reading of other people.

...running after the tax collector and returning to pretend to his friends that he hadn't been rebuffed. Great!
It's all in the immediacy of the writing. It really feels like a screenplay at times. (2/2)

I love that too. And then so strange that that narrator seems to disappear immediately.

At the end, I love the loneliness of 'There was no one downstairs' and 'One of her dresses was still hanging in the alcove'. The specificity of Charles 'leaning against the writing desk'. 'His mind full of sad thoughts' (at least in this translation) suggesting something temporary and overwhelming.

Also, the fact that the titular character is 1 of 3 women, all with the same name seems important. Something about her identity being lost in that name.

I was wondering what the point of including the 1st wife might have been, since she's gotten rid of so quickly. It seemed like maybe his emotional infidelity to his first wife is being set up as a contrast to what comes later.

The chronology of the first chapter is so unusual. I don't think I've ever seen the sequence:
brief introductory scene viewing character from afar -> account of parents' lives -> history of character going into and past intro scene -> main timeframe of novel, several years later
