Photo of our #heatpump running for the first time this afternoon. It has been sipping cheap-rate electricity stored in our home battery and borrowing heat from the environment for us. @myzerocarbon.org #netzero

Day two and our boiler is gone. Heat pump not yet connected to electricity nor plumbing, so these little electric buddies will be warming the house for next week. Hot water though, via an immersion heater. #heatpump #netzero

Getting our heat pump installed as of today so expect a lot of content about that. Dog meets his heat pump for first time

Super windy in the UK this weekend so @octopus.energy are giving four hours of free electricity (and hour last night, three today). We've got EV charging, home battery charging, laundry on, dehumidifier running.

Been to see these guys reunited. Reliving my teenage angst phase.

Free hour of electricity from Octopus just now as it was windy this afternoon. About 25 miles of driving at no cost. Third time this week I've charged the car for free.

Took the scenic route to my department.

Set up for day 1 of 14 days straight of summer school teaching on Global Ethics.

Super windy right now in the UK so wholesale electricity is basically free for the next 16 hours. Octopus giving us a free hour tomorrow afternoon as a result.

We've had a heat pump survey today. 👀. Also, car service said the battery health is down to 93% after year 2. It was 94% last year so levelling off as expected.

Yesterday fellow @myzerocarbon.org trustee Joanna Schuder and I met our MP @ollyglover.bsky.social to discuss how politicians can make the net zero transition easier for citizens.

You can now get viable EVs for less than £8k! MG5 (estate) and Corsa-e (hatchback) like this one. (Also Zoes and leafs but watch out for the rapid charging options on these.) EVs are VERY cheap to run if you can charge at home. @myzerocarbon.org

Imagine telling someone 20 years ago that we would be getting 6.3% of our electricity from fossil fuels in Great Britain, as is the case at this moment. They would struggle to believe you. #energytransition @myzerocarbon.org #netzero

Did Trump skip straight to the 'crackpots and fools' stage?

Apparently it is two years since we had our solar panels installed.
So I checked the stats.
In that time we have generated 9,696.40kWh of electricity. Painfully close to 10mWh.

Giles Dickson at WindEurope provided this simple yet powerful Pie chart. It shows that 93% of Europe's industry is capable of being electrified by 2035. #renewablefuture #netzero #electrifyeverything @myzerocarbon.org

This image shows the reason why. Green H2 is an inherently inefficient use of renewable power.

Windy day today. Octopus giving us an hour of free electricity; Cheers!

Apparently I'm a blue sky 'elder' because I'm number #552,695!

Cheers Octopus energy - I will have some free electricity tomorrow thank you very much! I will fill the car up and the home battery and anything else I can think of.

Most recent energy bill was -£83.39. This #solar lark is paying off much better than I expected!
July 8, 2024 at 9:26 PM
Damn! First energy bill requiring payment since we got our solar system connected last Summer. Didn't quite make it through the winter. (FYI - export payments also covered gas and standing charge).

Windy Spring days like this may be the first to be zero carbon electricity in the UK. Currently only 2.7% gas and 3.4% biomass. More wind and solar coming online all the time so it is only a matter of time! Will need more batteries and EVs for the surplus! #NetZero @myzerocarbon.bsky.social
